Why Education

ADOPT A VILLAGE | THE FOUR PILLARS OF SUSTAINABILITY

ADOPT A VILLAGE | EDUCATION

There is no magic bullet to eliminate extreme poverty but if there were, it would be universal primary education.

Education provides the highest return of any social investment.

Studies show that just three years of basic education make a quantitative difference in the lives of children and their communities.

Imagine if you couldn’t read or write, if you couldn’t count the money you earn, if you couldn’t even sign your name — what future would you have?

With primary education, we are empowering children to not only learn reading, writing and arithmetic, but to learn to protect themselves from HIV and AIDS, from malaria, tuberculosis and cholera through basic sanitation principles as simple as washing their hands.

Educated children are more equipped to build strong livelihoods through better employment opportunities.

Educated girls, especially, lead healthier lives and contribute to better life outcomes for their household and community as a whole. These girls are also better prepared to protect their own rights and become self-sufficient.

ADOPT A VILLAGE | HEALTHCARE

EVERY YEAR, 9.2 MILLION CHILDREN DIE BEFORE THE AGE OF FIVE. The majority of these deaths occurs in the developing world and is preventable with adequate medical treatment. For the thousands of children and families we serve, even the most common injuries and illnesses go untreated. For many, there are no doctors, no nurses, no hospitals, and the nearest medical facilities are understaffed, poorly equipped and require hours of walking to reach.

Healthcare is a significant concern for the communities we support.

With no healthcare and no health education, diseases like HIV/AIDS, malaria, typhoid, dysentery and a slew of other waterborne diseases continue to run rampant across the developing world — devastating families — and keeping children from getting an education that can turn this around.

We recognize the link between helping people meet their basic healthcare needs and building strong communities.

The Healthcare pillar of Adopt a Village provides mobile health clinics, basic medical supplies, training for healthcare workers, student lunch programs, tree nurseries, community gardens for fresh nourishing food; healthcare and awareness workshops to educate communities on preventable diseases, kitchen and dining halls, and sports equipment to promote physical fitness.

With the start of each new school year students in the Maasai Mara benefit from our school-based nutrition programs that ensure that each student attending primary school receives a hot midday meal. The meal typically consists of maize, beans, or rice, with an increasing focus on diversifying the students’ diets to include more nutrient-rich foods such as cabbage, collard greens, onions, spinach, and carrots/

School gardens and farming projects supplement the lunch programs with nutritious fresh foods. Each school is assigned a garden plot for the students to learn about agriculture best practices, small-scale irrigation, crop production, nutrition, and the benefits of consuming a variety of fruits and vegetables. The students are encouraged to implement lessons they learn at school in their gardens at home.

ADOPT A VILLAGE | WATER & SANITATION

For many developing communities the same water source that’s used for drinking and cooking is also used as a dumping ground for human and animal waste.

80% of illnesses in the developing world are linked to poor water and sanitation.

  • Contaminated water is the cause of death for 1 in 4 children under the age of 6.
  • 2.5 billion people are without access to sanitation facilities.

Unclean water sources, stagnant and often plagued with bacteria and contaminants, are frequently located many miles from communities, forcing women and children — especially girls — to spend hours each day hauling back-breaking loads of water weighing up to 40 pounds to their homes. The result is that children are either too sick or don’t have time to go to school. And so, the cycle of poverty continues.

The Unstoppable Foundation believes that clean water isn’t a luxury — it’s a basic human right.

The Water & Sanitation pillar of the Adopt a Village model provides communities with localized clean water sources and sanitation facilities, reducing the spread of waterborne diseases and freeing children of their daily treks to collect water, allowing them to attend school.

The healthier children are, the more able they are to attend school and remain attentive, contributing members to their communities. Clean water and sanitation projects include the construction of wells, rain catchment systems, hand-washing stations, and latrines. By funding the Adopt a Village model, we’re providing education for all community members in basic hygiene practices and waterborne disease prevention, creating healthier environments for children and their families.

ADOPT A VILLAGE | ALTERNATIVE INCOME

More than half the world’s population lives on less than $2 per day.

In the developing world this kind of crippling poverty forces many parents to send their children into the workforce to provide for the family instead of going to school. With little to no source of income, they can’t afford proper meals, adequate living conditions or even healthcare if their children get sick. As a result, many families are forced to borrow money from lenders they can never hope to repay — pushing them further and further into debt.

For mothers the grip of poverty is even worse. Across the developing world, women’s education and literacy rates pale in comparison to those of men. And with household responsibilities keeping them at home many mothers have neither the mobility nor the means to earn a living.

The Adopt a Village Alternative Income pillar targets marginalized parents, especially women, with resources to generate a sustainable source of income, increase their savings, and start their own businesses.

The resources we provide include sewing machines, farming supplies, women’s lending circles, animals for breeding and milking, financial literacy workshops, micro-credit loans, business training sessions and women’s support groups.

Parents are given the education, tools and skills to sustain their incomes and break the cycle of poverty once and for all.
